This April saw four of Scotland’s top theatre companies showcasing their critically acclaimed shows to American audiences on New York's Broadway and beyond.

Shows produced by National Theatre Scotland, Random Accomplice, Visable Fictions and Shona Reppe Puppets have all performed in America this month and garnered the same critical success on the other side of the Atlantic as they have in the UK. All of these companies have received investment from Creative Scotland.

Black Watch – National Theatre Scotland

First performed in 2006, Black Watch is based on interviews conducted by Gregory Burke with former soldiers who served in Iraq. Viewed through the eyes of those on the ground, Black Watch reveals what it means to be part of the legendary Scottish regiment, what it means to be part of the war on terror and what it means to make the journey home again.

Black Watch has been seen by audiences across three continents and has garnered over 22 awards to date including four prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards. National Theatre Scotland recently completed a run of Black Watch at the Broadway Armory in Chicago.

The Promise – Random Accomplice

Formed in 2002 by RSAMD (The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama) graduates Julie Brown and Johnny McKnight, Random Accomplice was setup to produce stimulating and contemporary comedic theatre. Their production The Promise, staring Joanna Tope as retired teacher Maggie Brodie, opened at the 59e59 theatre in New York on the 3 April and kick started the Scotland Week celebrations in the city.

Shopping for Shoes – Visable Fictions

Visable Fictions have established themselves over the last 16 years as one of Scotland’s leading theatre companies. Over the years they have performed extensively in America and were the first Scottish theatre company to be invited to perform on Broadway in New York with their production of The Red Balloon.

Their latest production Shopping for Shoes, a funny, heart-warming tale of teenage love, has just completed two performances on Broadway and is currently touring America throughout April and May.

The Potato Needs a Bath – Shona Reppe Puppets

Established in 1996, Shona Reppe Puppets is dedicated to creating highly visual and entertaining theatre for children and has received numerous awards including a Total Theatre Award for best visual theatre at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Potato Needs a Bath, a musical tale about vegetables getting ready for a party, is currently in the middle of a highly successful run at the New Victory theatre on Broadway in New York.
