Screening Shorts - A New Film Resource

An innovative new online resource to help Scottish teachers use film and moving image texts in the classroom was launched by Creative Scotland and Education Scotland at the Scottish Learning Festival 2011. Screening Shorts is a web-based collection of film resources, tutorials and lesson plan ideas, with a CPD focus that aims to improve and support teachers’ classroom skills.
The website – the first of its kind – is a definitive guide for teachers on how to use film and audio visual images alongside traditional books and other written work. The use of moving image as a literacy text across the Curriculum for Excellence offers engaging and exciting opportunities to get pupils speaking, listening, reading, writing and creating. Short films are the ideal vehicle for this. Using approved film material from BFI Education (fiction, animation and factual), Screening Shorts provides hands-on, in-depth film tutorials covering the core concepts of moving image education for teachers to explore and use in their classroom activities. The resources available will lnclude:
- Film tutorials explaining the core concepts of film language
- Lesson examples in streaming video format showing how short films can be used for various classroom activities
- Over 50 complete short films available for download
As well as teacher guides and tutorials, the resource will be a gateway to CPD activities for teachers wishing to explore how to use moving image across the Curriculum for Excellence.
Access to the website and resources will be through Glow authentication, and will be linked to the growing national Moving Image Education Glow Group network.
