The assessment process for the Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Awards is a two-stage procedure. Stage One assesses all applications and shortlists applicants to go forward to the final judging Panel, which is Stage Two.

Until 2004, Stage One involved four groups, each comprising of external experts and Scottish Arts Council artform officers.  Each of the four groups had a nominated Chairperson and these Chairpersons, plus a further four or five independent experts, formed the final Panel of judges.

From 2004, the assessment process was improved to allow the same people to be involved at both stages. Initial Stage One assessment is still done in four groups, which comprise previous recipients of Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Awards and independent experts in their field, supported by Scottish Arts Council artform officers.

All Stage One assessors, with the exception of the Scottish Arts Council artform officers, plus an independent Chairperson, make up the final panel of judges. The Panel makes independent choices, and its decisions are final.

*Please note: We are currently reviewing how we recognise and support individual artists, with the intention of ensuring Scottish artists are celebrated for their excellent achievements throughout their career. The results of this review are expected within the next three months, at which point we will publish an update for applicants.
